An Interesting Combination
We all had favorite snacks when we were kids. Some snacks are concoctions you find so tasty, you carry them into adulthood as well.
When this person shared mac n’ cheese with their boyfriend for the first time, the way they topped their plate left their boyfriend shocked. After all, not many people pair apple sauce with instant mac n’ cheese. But, hey — if it tastes good to you, enjoy.
Plenty of people have nicknames for body parts. For instance, it’s pretty common for kids to refer to their stomachs as their “tummy.”
In another instance of related words, this person’s mother used to refer to their teeth as “fangs.” So, they didn’t think much of it when they said this. As for their partner who hadn’t grown up hearing the phrase, they were a bit startled by the wording.
A Different Name
There are plenty of things that go by more than one name. We just looked at one example when talking about the teeth!
This person’s story was a bit more involved with the kitchen, though. What do you call the first and last piece of a loaf of bread? For many, the answer is the “heel” of the bread. This family had a different approach and this person eventually realized it wasn’t a common nickname outside of their family.
What Is That?
Speaking of more than one name in the kitchen, it’s probably best to clarify these questions before dinner starts. Otherwise, the serving will surprise some!
When this person said they wanted to make pigs in a blanket for a cocktail party, their spouse couldn’t quite see their reasoning. If they were referring to stuffed cabbage, we could see why their husband thought they’d made a mistake in planning the snacks for the guests.
An Easier Method
Plenty of siblings share many arguments throughout their childhood. It’s a by-product of spending so much time together, after all. These siblings seem like they got the hang of sharing better than some.
That, or they just found watching someone else play a video game just as enjoyable as grabbing the controller themselves. Either way, it seems like gaming was rather peaceful in this household, at least among these siblings.
A Change in Approach
People play board games with kids differently. In this person’s case, their family was more prone to letting the kids when rather than playing harshly.
As for their partner’s family, they fostered a competitive spirit from a young age. So, they weren’t quite ready with their A-game when they were invited to their first family game night. It seems like no one was about to give anyone a break!
We all have different family recipes that we pass down. After all, parents often are the first people to teach their kids to cook. This family recipe was a little odd compared to the way most people prepare spaghetti.
You can add protein, of course, but most people opt for meatballs or some sort of ground meat or substitute. It’s not as common to reach for the tuna to finish off your spaghetti.
Differing Snack Preferences
We all have a meal we fall back on when we’re having a hard day and need a little comfort. These dishes can vary depending on what you grew up with. This person’s meal is simple but still a bit unique.
All you need is a bit of rice, a boiled egg, and some sauce. It makes a pretty low-effort meal but the flavor might not be for everyone. That’s what this person learned when they suggested their favorite snack to their partner.
A Weird Concept in Retrospect
There are some traditions that you really don’t question as a kid but when you look back on them as an adult, you have to wonder where the tradition came from.
The memory that this person was wondering about when they tweeted this was one many people can relate to. However, when you think about it, it’s a wonder how something like “birthday spankings” caught on. Naturally, this person’s spouse was perplexed.
Where to Keep the Bread
One thing that spouses or partners may find surprisingly conflicting when they move in together is how they both organize the home.
Some small things you don’t think about might vary from person to person or family to family. To this person, it was the norm to toss the bread in the fridge when you were ready to store it. On the contrary, their girlfriend saw it as one of their stranger habits.
Sounds Pretty Good
If you stay up late, you’ll probably feel yourself getting peckish after dinner. In fact, sometimes you’re so hungry that a snack isn’t quite enough.
This family had a simple answer to that question. If you’re hungry for another meal at the end of the night, just make another one. According to this family, at least, this “night lunch” is essential. We have to say, it sounds like a pretty good idea to us!
Of course, if you’re still hungry after dinner, dessert is another option if you have a bit of a sweet tooth. There are plenty of dessert options, too.
Running to your garden for a fresh tomato to throw on a sandwich probably wouldn’t stand out too much. However, most people choose to top off their tomato sandwich with a condiment like mayo or by adding some salt. Sugar is a much sweeter choice.
An Interesting Preference
There are sometimes that you see someone grab some bread and it makes sense to eat it with butter. Toast comes to mind as the first and most immediate example.
This person was shocked to see their spouse adding butter to bread anytime they ate it. Whether it was for a sandwich or toast, the butter was always there. We have to wonder if they liked the butter-free sandwiches more or if they prefer their original recipe.
Out of Habit
There are some things that are really ingrained in you from a young age. For instance, many learn that saying “bless you” when someone sneezes is the right thing to do.
If a stranger sneezes when you’re out in public, though, it’s not always appropriate to intrude on their conversation to offer a “bless you.” This person kept it quiet but their husband still picked up on the habit and didn’t find it very welcoming.
Learning Something New
There’s a lot that goes into good cooking. The right spices can go a long way and save a lot of dishes. Without any spices at all, you’re not going to have a lot of flavor in your meals.
Tacos, specifically, need the right seasoning to make the protein get the taste you’re expecting. This person’s wife was probably opened to a whole new world of flavor during this dinner.
Eating It All
When you’re feeling hungry, sometimes a juicy piece of fruit is just what you’re craving. If you’re this person, it’s a snack that leaves nothing behind either. For the most part, people skip out on eating the apple cores.
The strawberry leaves may surprise some but the apple seeds and cores really steal the show here. We’re glad to hear that they don’t eat the stem but it seems like the core of the apple must not be quite as enjoyable.
A drive-in is a great family outing if you have a family of movie lovers. Plus, a drive-in makes it much easier to bring your own snacks as compared to a traditional movie theater.
So, what’s the perfect movie snack to bring? For this family, the answer was plenty of spaghetti. To be fair, it doesn’t sound bad to come to the movies with dinner as well as snacks, although spaghetti, in particular, seems a bit messy.
On Adding a Step
When you jump out of the shower, you probably have a routine just as much as you have one when you get up in the morning or get ready for bed. You might not even think about it either.
After all, how much thought do you really put into drying your hair after you get out of the shower? This person wasn’t thinking about how they dried their hair until someone pointed out that it was a bit strange to them.
A Bit of a Dark Joke
There are some things you hear over the years, especially if you have a parent in the medical field. Blue lips, for example? Usually not good.
Well, that is unless you have blue lips because you were enjoying blue candy. Still, it’s an opening for a joke if you’re okay with a dark sense of humor. It’s the type of joke that really gave this person’s partner’s family pause the first time they heard it.
Grab the Cutlery
Table habits are one of those things that vary a lot. From place to place and even family to family, different practices, preferences, and habits are noticeable.
What about cutlery? This family opted for knives, forks, and spoons for their meals and they did mean every single meal. While it’s a great way to keep your hands clean while you eat if that’s your preference, it might confuse some like this person’s spouse.
There are some habits that parents pick up after they have kids. In response, sometimes the kids pick up these habits too.
It wasn’t until this person was much older that they realized how jarring this habit must sound to some. Unlike many of the stories we’ve seen here so far, this one didn’t end in a change of habits. While their spouse was surprised, they couldn’t argue that the trick didn’t work!
An Extra Ingredient
Like we said before, family recipe books are a great place to learn some of the cooking habit differences between your family and your spouse.
This person was shocked when they watched their girlfriend make chili for the first time. Now, chili is a recipe that can vary a bit depending on where you are and your preferences but ham isn’t usually heavily featured in a chili. We wonder how it turned out.
Dogs come in all forms and breeds and some are definitely sharper and quicker to pick up on training than others. It’s hard to tell until you meet them.
Even then, it’s their behavior that usually tells whether or not they’ll be considered “smart” or not. This person grew up learning that if a dog had a bump on its head, it meant they were smart. But, as they asked about it, they realized it wasn’t as familiar a tale to everyone.
Not Remembered Fondly
There are some chores you dread when you’re a kid. After all, chores are usually part of your responsibilities growing up and they aren’t always the most fun. This person clearly doesn’t remember their childhood chore fondly.
In fact, they don’t quite remember the salsa “substitute” their family used either. We can’t really blame them — adding ketchup to your tacos doesn’t quite have the same flavor as salsa. They were surprised to learn these weren’t universal experiences.
Which One Is Which?
There are some games that a lot of people are familiar with from their childhood. For many, a duck-duck-goose was a go-to game. However, you may not know it by that name apparently.
The game actually has a few different names, depending on the locale that you’re from. For this family, the game was known as Duck, Duck, Gray Duck. We have to say, you’d have to pay close attention if you were playing a version with a different name!
A Difference in Toppings
We all have our own preferences when it comes to food. This might be influenced by what foods you were introduced to when you were younger.
This person was clearly used to pancakes coming with maple syrup — especially living somewhere like Canada where maple syrup is so popular. Yet, as their spouse was quick to prove to them, there are other options for your pancakes, even if this person thought it was pretty weird.
Everyone Has Their Preferences
The volume on the TV is something some people are pretty particular about. Like many, this person prefers to leave the volume on an even number. On the other hand, their girlfriend thought it was weird.
That’s okay, though, because this person found some of their girlfriend’s habits weird too. Although, while it might seem weird, there’s something impressive about an ability to drink hot sauce as a genuine preference. Even spicy-food-lovers might hesitate before trying this method.
Noticing a Pattern
When you watch shows as a kid, you probably don’t think about them too critically. As a matter of fact, you might miss some of the things to criticize until you get older.
Rewatching their favorite childhood movies as an adult, this person realized that those movies had a startling trend in retrospect. In case they’d missed it on their own, it was a trend their husband — who is German — noticed pretty quickly.
Fun and Games
As a kid, there are few things more powerful and fun than using your imagination to come up with entertainment. Sometimes, it sticks! This person seems like they came up with a fun one.
With only a hand mirror, they could pretend they were walking on the one part of the house they couldn’t! It seems like their spouse didn’t come up with the same idea, though. At least this one seems fun and weird.
We already looked at one couple who surprised each other at the breakfast table when the pancakes were brought out. It seems like this person was ready for the usual toppings like syrup.
So, they were more than a little surprised to see their spouse looking for the peanut butter. This one isn’t too weird, though, and it seems like a good way to add a bit of protein to your pancakes.
How Do You Say It?
Not every number is referred to by name. For instance, you might refer to $1,000 as a grand rather than saying the full term. Or, more apt to this scenario, a dozen refers to 12 of something.
So, by this person’s logic, describing six of something as “half a dozen” made sense. While still correct, their friend saying “two threes” rather than “half a dozen” definitely introduced them to a new phrase.
He’s Just a Pet
There are some animals that shouldn’t really be kept as pets. We can’t imagine that catching a mountain lion and keeping it in the backyard counts as an ethical pet.
As if the idea that the neighbor has a mountain lion wasn’t scary enough, it was allowed to roam free enough to bother the neighborhood kids too. This person was floored when their spouse shared this story and how normally everyone treated it at the time.
Sweet and Savory
Some flavor combinations are classic and they’re hard to pass up on. There are some dishes where sweet and savory flavors come together brilliantly. On the other hand, some sweet and savory flavors really clash.
For this person, while we can understand the jam and pancakes, we can see why the first combination caught them off guard. Honey and scrambled eggs are a combination not everyone would come up with or want to give a try.
One Way to Say It
A lot of things have technical names that not everyone uses. Especially among families, nicknames for everyday concepts and objects are quite common.
We can see how this family got to this name. After all, if you lock a car and set the alarm, it makes a chirping sound. So, it makes sense to say “chirp the car.” Still, that doesn’t mean everyone will know what you’re referring to the first time you say it.
A Little Sweeter
Tacos are one of those dishes that come with room for customization. From the protein you choose to the toppings you add, you can create the perfect taco for you. That said, not everyone’s perfect taco is the same concept as the next person’s.
This person definitely wouldn’t trade tacos with their ex. That is, as long as no one wanted something as sweet as pure sugar on their tacos. We wonder what prompted this person to try it for the first time.
It Makes Sense
For most sandwiches, you probably grab a couple pieces of bread and the fillings you plan on adding.
If you’re just looking for a snack, you can make a smaller sandwich by using one piece of bread just folded on itself down the middle. Most people just still call this a sandwich but we can see why this person’s family would refer to it by a more specific name. It’s just definitely not a name the people around them recognized.
Oh, Maybe Not
There are some instances in nature when mothers feed their babies rather directly. Most people think of birds right off the bat.
Apparently, it’s not a practice all humans shy away from either. As for this person, they were shocked to see how surprised everyone was by this statement. If you grew up with it, we can see why it might seem standard but it’s not a super common practice.
On Using Titles
There’s some family you call by their titles. For example, you probably call your parent some variant of “Mom” or “Dad” or use a moniker like “aunt” in front of your aunt’s name.
This family decided to drop the formalities on aunt and uncles, which would be easy enough to adjust to. However, this person was surprised to see the respective titles added to family members who don’t usually use them, like cousins.
Do You Want Some Round Beans?
Kids come up with interesting names for things. If a child called peas “round beans,” you can see why they’d come to that conclusion.
Without anyone telling them that the nickname was… well, a nickname, they missed the memo on peas. In fact, they weren’t even sure that “peas” was the real name before someone pointed it out to them. We guess they must not buy peas that often.
Siblings tend to make up their own games, habits, and traditions over the years. It’s part of filling the time as you grow up together and form bonds.
You might even have odd practices with your siblings that you might not think about but surprise other people. This person said their friend was shocked to learn one of the strange traditions their girlfriend and her siblings came up with. We wonder if he ended up with marshmallows on his face, too.
Never Thought About It
When you put a shirt on, how do you start? Do you put your head in and then your arms? Do you just throw it on all at once?
The person who shared this story didn’t think too much about how they put their shirt on until someone pointed out to them what they were doing. Instead of putting their hands through the sleeves first, they went with their elbows. Doesn’t this stretch their shirts out?
Sounds Harder to Spread
There are some things that most people find annoying. Trying to butter toast with butter that won’t spread is a morning frustration that annoys many.
Interestingly, this person disagreed in a big way. The butter melting into the bread is exactly what they wanted to avoid. How do they avoid it? Just freeze the bread! We’re glad this person is following their preferences but it seems so inefficient.
A Learned Skill
When you live in certain areas, you might pick up on relevant knowledge. For instance, if you live around a lot of animals, you might know which ones to avoid at all costs.
Growing up on military bases, this person could hear different types of aircraft with a bit more of a refined ear than most people. For the most part, while people recognize the sound of a plane or helicopter but they probably can’t tell you what type of aircraft it is beyond that.
There are some cases in which you have to change the volume on the TV. For others, it’s left up to preference.
With the volume of shows changing so frequently, we can’t blame this person for keeping the remote close while they watched their show. Their girlfriend, on the other hand, didn’t seem to seek this same consistency and thought it was a lot of extra trouble for her partner to go through.
What Did You Do?
There are some treats that you grow up enjoying but when you offer them to someone who hasn’t grown up trying them, they aren’t sure how to eat them. This can really put a damper on how much they enjoy the sweets they were offered.
Not to mention, these friends were probably floored to offer their friend gum and notice them snacking on it. At least the thing about it staying around for seven years is just a myth.
